The Fall of the Dream Machine is a 1969 novel by Dean Koontz. The story centers on a entertainment phenomena known as "Show", a virtual reality technology which allows viewers to experience the sensation of the "Show's" actors and actresses.

Mike Jorgova is one of the show's best actors and makes his best effort to engage in activities the producers believe will be entertaining for viewers particularly sleeping with his costar. Viewers become so engrossed in the experience they abandon all else and some have even died as a result. Mike wants out of the "show" but retirement is not permitted.

Mike is aided in his escape by a mysterious organization rebelling against the system, particularly Anaxemander Cockley, the man responsible for the development of the "show" and its success. Cokley has become the wealthiest man in the world from the profits that come from viewers purchasing items seen on the show which they afford thanks to government subsidies, also controlled by Cockley.

After his escape, Mike is given a new identity and trained as a government agent. His first assignment is to infiltrate Cockley's organization and begin a revolution to overthrow Cokley's influence.
