The Exorcist is an Academy Award winning 1973 horror film based on the William Peter Blatty novel of the same name. The novel and film are based on a story Blatty heard while attending Georgetown University about a minister who claimed to have exorcised demons from a young boy. The film was directed by William Friedkin and starred Linda Blair as the possessed Regan Teresa MacNeil and Max von Sydow and Jason Miller as Fathers Lankester Merrin and Damien Karras. The film has become a classic and a landmark in horror films. It won Academy Awards for Best Screenplay and sound. Linda Blair, Ellen Burstyn, and Jason Miller were also nominated for Oscars for their roles.
Plot
An actress, Chris MacNeill, visiting Washington, D.C. with her daughter begins to notice her daughter's unusual behavior. A priest, Father Damian Karas, at nearby Georgetown University, begins to doubt his faith. When Chris' daughter's symptoms become worse and include levitation and changes in her appearance, she calls on Karas who also happens to be a psychologist. He becomes convinced that she is possessed and he, in turn, calls a colleague experienced in exorcism, Father Lancester Merrin. Father Merrin has battled evil before and the two priests work together to rid Teresa of the demons possessing her before they destroy her.
