Fans who saw the promotion for this movie might be surprised that it is primarily a courtroom drama.
A college student dies after a priest attempts to exorcise demons from her. The priest is charged with negligent homicide.
His defense in this high profile case is handled by an a well-known attorney (Erin Bruner, portrayed by Laura Linney) who has recently won an acquittal in another media-frenzy murder case.
As the story is told, we see things from Emily Rose's perspective. She is the deceased girl, and the recreations of what she experienced definitely place the movie in the Sci Fi realm. The prosecution argues that her bodily contortions and visions of demons are the result of a combination of epilepsy and psychosis.
These scenes are a small part of the movie. There is also the possibility that demonic forces are affecting Erin and other people surrounding the trial.
The movie is reportedly based on the case of Anneliese Michel, a German who died in similar circumstances.
