Plot

At the end of "Children of the Gods," Major Charles Kawalsky became infested by a Goa'uld unbeknownst to his teammates. The symbiote, too young to take full control of Kawalsky's body, remains dormant for a while but soon Kawalsky begins to experience headaches and blackouts.

As a result of the unexpected intrusions through the stargate, a titanium Iris has been installed just three micrometers from the event horizon of the wormhole preventing matter from reintegrating. Several goa'uld attempts to attack Earth through the Stargate are thwarted as a result. A self-destruct device has also been installed to destroy the complex in case the iris fails.

O'Neill's request to have Teal'c join SG-1 is denied and Teal’c, now a defector to Earth is being interrogated by representatives from the Pentagon. He and the goa'uld he carries are also subjected to several tests. Teal'c is asked to give details on goa'uld technology including the operation of the Stargates and the power source for goa'uld ships and weapons. Teal'c doesn't have the answers they seek as goa'uld 'magic' is forbidden to the Jaffa. He does manage to explain some details regarding the goa'uld, however.

According to Teal'c, the goa'uld are small in number but growing and they control hundreds of planets, ruling by force. The goa'uld do not rule all planets however and leave several to their own devices. He explains that thanks to the iris, it would take the goa'uld several months or years to amass armies of slaves and ships to attack Earth. When asked where the slaves come from, he mentions a world discovered by the goa'uld where people known as the Tau'ri first evolved. The goa'uld took humans from this world; some became hosts, others Jaffa and the rest slaves seeded across the galaxy to serve the goa'uld. The home of the Tau'ri was lost long ago. Colonel Kennedy, Teal'c’s interrogator informs Teal'c that Earth is the home of the Tau'ri, who rebelled against Ra five thousand years ago.

Kawalsky visits the infirmary to check on his headaches. The doctor notices a lump on Kawalsky's neck which moves up into his brain causing him pain. Kawalsky's eyes glow and he grabs the doctor by the neck, killing him. Kawalsky then finds himself in the gate room, staring at the gate, unaware of how he got there. He is scheduled for an MRI which reveals the symbiote in his brain, wrapped around his spine.

The goa'uld takes over once more. Kawalsky leaves the MRI room and heads for the control room where he starts dialing the gate. When he is discovered by Carter he attacks her and takes her hostage. He takes her into the elevator and she is injured. The real Kawalsky returns and is taken back to the infirmary where he is confined to a bed. The doctor proposes a complex and dangerous operation that could paralyze Kawalsky but Kawalsky agrees to it, desperate to be rid of the pain and the goa’uld. Teal'c informs them that attempting to do so, will cause the goa'uld to kill Kawalsky.

The goa'uld takes over Kawalsky’s body and speaks to Hammond. He threatens to destroy them if he is not released prompting General Hammond to order the surgery. Colonel Kennedy disagrees with the decision; he has hopes that the symbiote could be saved and the knowledge it possesses shared but Teal'c assures him the goa'uld would never do so willingly. Kennedy arranges for Tealc's transfer to another facility to be studied.

Teal'c's symbiote is used to test several anesthetics for the surgery. Kawalsky undergoes the operation and survives. After the operation, Kawalsky appears to be doing well and asks to see Teal'c to thank him for saving his life. He requests a moment alone with him and immediately attacks and strangles Teal'c.

Kawalsky escapes the infirmary and heads for the control room where he dials the gate. Teal'c informs Dr. Warner of what happened. Meanwhile, Kawalsky sets the auto destruct in the control room and lowers the blast doors. He enters the gate room but Teal'c has already made his way there and prevents him from going through the gate. Kawalsky attacks Teal'c while Hammond and O'Neill disable the auto destruct.

Teal'c and Kawalsky struggle and Teal'c pushes Kawalsky's head into the open wormhole. O'Neill raises the blast doors, sees the two struggling and tells Teal'c to hold Kawalsky's head in the event horizon. O'Neill has the gate shut down, cutting Kawalsky's head off. The goa'uld falls out and shrivels.

Daniel is disappointed with the outcome in regards to Skaara and Sha're since surgically removing the goa'uld is not an option. Carter points out that the fact that the goa'uld knew the base's auto destruct code proves that something of the host survives so there is still some hope.

Hammond speaks to the president and Colonel Kennedy is overruled. Teal'c is allowed to join SG-1.
