Plot

The Dresden Files stars Paul Blackthorne as the intrepid Harry Dresden, Wizard. Co-starring with our beloved Paul is the lovely and talented Valerie Cruz as Lt. Connie Murphy (Homicide Detective for the Chicago Police Department), Conrad Coates as the implacable Morgan, and Raoul Bhaneja as Murphy’s rookie, Kirmani. We are very fortunate to also have the Emmy Nominee Terrence Mann in the role of Bob-the-Ghost (once known as Rothbert of Bainbridge, Sorcerer).

Harry was born in 1971, and is the only son of a hapless stage show magician and a very lovely lady. He inherited his magical Gift from her. His Mother died when he was 3 years old, and his Father died when he was 11 years old. After his Father died, he went to live with his Mother’s brother, Justin Morningway. This is when Harry began his education in Magic.

Harry lives in a small apartment behind his store front. He seems to have an endless supply of books just lying around in piles as well as dried lizard skins, half empty bottles of potions, silver spikes, shards of crystal, and other clutter. He seems to hold the firm belief that huge, untidy piles of loose paper plopped down somewhere close to a file cabinet is exactly the same thing as actually filing them away were they belong.

Harry shares this small space with his mentor, Bob, a ghost who is damned to spend eternity inside his own skull (don’t ask). Bob was once the property of Harry’s Uncle, Justin Morningway. But that was before Harry murdered his Uncle with the highly addictive and soul stealing Black Magic. Now, Bob serves Harry… constantly, whether he likes it or not.

Justin Morningway was a very wealthy and powerful Sorcerer before Harry self-defensed him to death (Hey, don’t look at me like that - Bob said it first!). Harry was held accountable for his Uncle’s death by Ancient Mai, head of the High Counsel in Chicago (cue ominous music). The High Counsel is the governing body for those of the magical persuasion. Fortunately for us, Harry was found to be Not Guilty by Reason of Self Defense. He was placed on “probation” and Warden Morgan (one of Mai’s less rabid pit-bulls) was assigned as Harry’s Probation Officer.

Since Harry was Justin’s only heir, he got all the money and the property that has been in his Mother’s family for centuries. Harry, in an act of self flagellation, immediately donated all the liquid assets to charity. He kept the mansion because he believes that it couldn’t be safe to sell it to some innocent “civilian” (a civilian is someone who is not of the Magical persuasion).

As a consequence of his guilty conscience, Harry is almost always stone broke. Whenever he does manage to get a client, they usually don’t pay him for his services. His main source of lunch money is Lt. Murphy. She hires him to work as a consultant on murder cases that have very strange (see supernatural) circumstances. Oh, by the way… Murphy doesn’t believe in magic.

Worse than that – if he dares to reveal the truth about how much supernatural weirdness is actually happening in the world – Morgan will kick him into next Tuesday. Morgan has the unshakable suspicion that; inevitably, Harry is going to surrender to his addiction to The Black. After Morgan gets done with his own peculiar brand of behavior modification, Harry can always look forward to Ancient Mai taking an interest in his development. Traditionally, Mai has been a powerful proponent of the Palm-in-Firm-Contact-with-the-Face school of cognitive behavior therapy. Harry is lucky to be sane at all.
