The Dark Knight ' is the 2008 sequel to Batman Begins. Christopher Nolan returns as the sequels director and Christian Bale reprises his title role as the vigilante superhero, Batman. Also returning to the film are Gary Oldman as Commisioner Jim Gordon, Michael Caine as butler, Alfred Pennyworth and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox. Maggie Gyllenhaal replaces Katie Holmes in the role of Rachel Dawes. The film is expected to be darker than its predecessor and introduces Heath Ledger as the Joker and Aaron Eckhart as Two-Face.

Heath Ledger died from an accidental overdose prior to the release of the film but even before his death his performance as the Joker was already gaining notice. Following his death, his final performance drew even more attention increasing interest in an already heavily anticipated release. The film proved to be a record-breaking blockbuster, opening with over $66.4 million dollars on it's first day and earning over $1510 million over opening weekend. The film won rave reviews from fans and critics.

The film's plot centers on Batman's dark nature and the rise of the Joker as his nemesis. Ledger's protrayal of the Joker differs dramatically from previous portrayals in appearance, physicality and nature, adding dark realism to the criminal. The story also introduces Aaron Eckhart is DA Harvey Dent and his transformation from a pursuer of justice within the law, into a criminal with a split personality.
