The Culture is a fictional technologically advanced posthuman society created by Iain Banks. The society is the setting for several of Banks' novels and short fiction works. "The Culture" is a an anarchist, socialist, and utopian society that has overcome many of the difficulties of the current era, most notably, scarcity, disease, death and problems which stem from the quest for personal property. The stories in the series focus mainly on individuals who live outside "The Culture" but whose work contributes greatly to its continued success.
