The Book of the New Sun is a novel series by Gene Wolfe written from 1980 to 1983. The collection was published by Bantam in 2000. The series tells the story of Severian, a torturer who is exiled from the Seekers for Truth and Penitence for showing mercy to his victim by permitting her to commit suicide. Severian begins a journey that sees him rise to the position of Autarch, leader of the free world. All four novels were nominated for Nebula Awards.
The four novels in the series are The Shadow of the Torturer, The Claw of the Conciliator , The Sword of the Lictor , and The Citadel of the Autarch. A fifth book, a coda, The Urth of the New Sun was later added to the series and earned Nebula and Hugo Award nominations. Wolfe also added two series set in the same universe as The Book of the New Sun titled The Book of the Long Sun and The Book of the Short Sun.
