The Bad Beginning is a children's fantasy novel by Daniel Handler, writing as Lemony Snicket. The novel is the first in the series, A Series of Unfortunate Events. It introduces the three orphaned Baudelaire children, 14-year-old Violet, 12-year-old Klaus and baby Sunny who are turned over to distant cousin Count Olaf after the deaths of their parents. Unfortunately, cousin Olaf is only after their fortunes and resorts to extreme measures to get it.
