The Avengers is a British television series in the spy genre. It originally aired between 1961 and 1969. Although the series is predominantly known for the period between 1965 and 1967, which starred Patrick MacNee as John Steed and Diana Rigg as Emma Peel, three lesser known seasons came before and one additional season followed. All of these other seasons featured Macnee's character working with individuals other than Emma Peel.

The program was created by Sydney Newman, who was head of drama at the Associated British Corporation. Newman would shortly move to the BBC, where he would enjoy the same title and be largely credited with creating another British classic, Doctor Who.

In the UK, the program aired on ITV.
