The series is set sometime after the year 2086. Earth has settled many colony worlds around it, has found that deep space is populated by a myriad of alien species, and has encountered some allies to defend themselves against the ravages of the Crown Empire.
Due to the lawless nature of the region, Earth and the other worlds that make up the League of Planets set up an organisation named BETA for Beureau of Extra-Terrestrial Affairs to oversee and coordinate military and police jurisdiction. BETA has formed a police force akin to the Texas Rangers they named the Galaxy Rangers. Within this group is an elite team known as the S5's or the Series-5 rangers. Each of whom has an experimental brain implant known as the Series-5 implant.
The Series-5 Rangers are:
- Captain Zachary Foxx - Leader of the rangers team and father of two children who feature in the series. He was introduced in the first episode when his ship was attacked by pirates and his wife taken prisoner by Captain Kidd. Zach's wife, Eliza was subsequently handed off to the Crown Empire and turned into a menacing Slaverlord. A large amount of the series' storylines featured Zach's internal battles to save his wife from the Crown and restore her to health.
- Shane 'Goose' Gooseman - A genetically engineered Supertrooper. Gooseman was the last member of a failed Supersoldier program that ran years before the formation of BETA. He has the ability to rapidly adapt to new environments and to adapt his skin to deflect or reflect any attack upon it. His character was modelled after Clint Eastwood.
- Niko - An archeologist who is also a gifted psychic. Her abilities included telepathy, telekinesis and a psychic shield. During the series it is discovered that she was an orphan raised on a hidden planet named Xanadu by a group of powerful psionics.
- Walter 'Doc' Hartford - The token black member of the team who was never a token. Doc was the computer specialist. His implant gave him phenomenal control over specialized programs he called tweakers and which could infilitrate any computer system and perform pretty much whatever tasks Doc could think up. His character was somewhat modelled after Billy Dee Williams and always had some of the best lines of any of the characters.
