Tess Doerner is a fictional character on the USA Network series The 4400 played by Summer Glau. Tess is one of the 4400, a schizophrenic young woman with powers of persuasion. Tess is the daughter of Vincent and Melissa Doerner, both deceased. She was abducted on April 3, 1955 from the Abendson Psychiatric Hospital.
On her return she was revealed to be able to persuade those around her to build a device she believed would contact people from the future. The device instead appeared to cause the recovery of fellow patient, Kevin Burkhoff.
Tess was later released from Abendson in the series' third season. While on medication, she proved able to function well in society. Her ability to influence others grew and she worked with Burkhoff in his attempt to develop 4400 abilities of his own. It is possible the two have a romantic connection.
Tess used her abilities to help Kevin force Diana Skouris to take promicin. The two were stopped before Diana could be seriously injured and they managed to escape and found a new life together outside of Newfield. They were found and recruited by Jordan Collier.
After witnessing Devon's death as a result of taking Promicin, Tess suffered a relapse due in large part to the guilt she felt for her part in Devon's death, and the death of all those who died as a result of taking promicin.
