Terence Dashon Howard (b. March 11, 1969, Chicago, Illinois) is an Academy Award-nominated American actor. Howard was nominated for the Oscar for his role as a pimp with musical aspirations in Hustle & Flow. He was also nominated for a Black Movie Award for his supporting role in the Best Picture winner Crash.
Howard's love of filmmaking was nurtured by his grandmother, stage actress Minnie Gentry. He was discovered in New York City by a casting director and began his career in television on the sitcoms Living Single and Family Matters and the biopics The Jacksons: An American Dream and The O.J. Simpson Story. Howard made many contributions to black film and television including King of the World, Big Momma's House, and appearances in Soul Food and Lackawana Blues.
His prominence in film has steadily increased since the early 2000s. Among his most notable roles are Hart's War with Bruce Willis, Their Eyes Were Watching God opposite Halle Berry, Ray with Jamie Foxx, The Brave One alongside Jodie Foster, August Rush and Awake with Jessica Alba.
Despite a prolific acting resume, Howard did not make a significant genre contribution until 2008 with the comic-book based film, Iron Man in which he plays Jim Rhodes.
