Telekinesis is the purported ability to move objects with the mind. Psychics claim to use this power by concentrating on a specific object.

Literally meaning "moving at a distance," telekinesis is generally considered synonymous with psychokinesis ("moving with the mind").

The term also, by extension, covers the ability to affect objects through an act of will. For example, "spoon-bending" (as popularized by magician Uri Geller), is usually considered to be related to telekinesis (although many believe it is actually accomplished through simple trickery). The same can be said for pyrokinesis, the claimed ability to start or manipulate fires through an act of will. It has been suggested that poltergeist activity is the result of unintended telekinesis, usually by an adolescent.

This type of ability is separate from the various psychic perceptive abilities (such as remote viewing, precognition, psychometry, and so on). Someone who is psychically perceptive need not be telekinetic, and vice versa.

Scientific testing of telekinesis has been conducted, yet the phenomenon has never been proven.

Telekinesis is a commonly used plot device in science fiction, horror, and fantasy books, movies, and TV series.
