History

Teal'c begins to believe that his god, Apophis, may not be all he claims to be. In the show's premiere, "Children of the Gods," Colonel Jack O'Neill and his team are captured and imprisoned on Chulak. Teal'c and his fellow Jaffa are ordered to execute them along with a large number of other prisoners. Even though Teal'c is the enemy, Jack sees something in him that makes him encourage Teal'c to help them escape and save the prisoners. In turn, Teal'c sees for the first time someone who may be able to deliver on his promise. He turns against his fellow Jaffa, and helps Jack and his team escape. Having betrayed his god, Teal'c is forced to leave his homeworld and finds a safe haven on Earth and a means to stage an opposition against the Goa'uld, with the hopes of eventually freeing his fellow Jaffa from their unknowing enslavement by the Goa'uld.

Despite saving Jack's team, Teal'c is not immediately accepted on Earth. He is interrogated and held prisoner, and experiments are done on the Goa'uld symbiote he carries. He proves his loyalty by preventing a Goa'uld-infected Charles Kawalsky from going through the stargate. He becomes a valuable member of SG-1 on Jack's request, providing important information about the Goa'uld.

Character

Teal'c was born on Chulak. His name, appropriately, means strength. His father, Ronac, was once the First Prime of Cronus, a rival of Apophis. Ronac was executed by Cronus for failure. Teal'c and his mother were then forced to flee into Apophis' territory where Teal'c, trained by the great Master Bra'tac, rose through the ranks of Apophis' Jaffa to the position of First Prime. Teal'cs mother was murdered which he later learned was ordered by Arkad in revenge for an attack ordered against his people by Apophis and led by Teal'c.

Teal'c married Drey'auc and together they had a son, Rya'c. Drey'auc did not share Teal'c's doubts that Apophis was not a god, and when he betrays Apophis he is forced to leave her and his son behind.

As evidenced by his rise to the rank of First Prime, Teal'c is a powerful warrior. Like most Jaffa, Teal'c carries a goa'uld larva that grants him great strength, long life, and a resistance to disease. Though he appears young, Teal'c is the oldest member of SG-1. He is, in fact, even older than General Hammond exceeding 101 years of age. By the end of the series, he is close to two hundred years after spending decades with his teammates inside a time dilation field on board The Odyssey. Teal'c chose to be unaffected by Carter's reversal of time, in order to save them all from being destroyed by an Ori vessel.

Teal'c is extremely focused. He is best known for his stoicism, his strength, and his determination. When he discovers the goa'uld are false gods, he is determined to spread the truth to his fellow Jaffa. Throughout the series his determination grows and he becomes a dominant figure in the Jaffa resistance. Despite being branded a Shol'va, (traitor) by his own people, Teal'c doesn't become discouraged, instead he sows the seeds of dissent that lead to numerous Jaffa realizing the truth, turning against their false gods, and joining the resistance.

Family

Teal'c's relationship with his family has been strained due to his defection to the Tau'ri. As a result of him being branded a traitor, his wife and son are poorly treated. They lose their home and become outcasts. When Teal'c returns to Chulak in "Bloodlines" to save his son from being implanted with a goauld larva, his wife is very resentful.

Teal'c's absence results in the dissolution of his marriage and Drey'auc eventually marries his friend Frotak who betrays them to Apophis. After Apophis brainwashes Ry'ac and tries to use him as a weapon against the Tau'ri, Teal'c takes his family to P3X-797, The Land of Light where Drey'Auc and Ry'ac live for a time before eventually moving to a free Jaffa camp. Drey'auc dies there, when she refuses to accept a new symbiote and Ry'ac becomes very angry with his father, blaming him for his mother's death and for choosing his fight against the Goa'uld above his family. Teal'c places Ry'ac in Bratac's care, where he is trained to be a Jaffa Warrior. Teal'c is forced to rescue them both and overcome his doubts about his strength when they are captured and sent to a Goa'uld death camp. Ry'ac eventually marries and Teal'c gained a daughter-in-law, Kar'yn.

Love Life

Teal'c has had several relationships during his time with the Tau'ri. While his wife was still alive, he reunited with an old love, the Jaffa priestess Shaun'auc of the Red Hills. Shaun'auc is betrayed by the mature symbiote she carried, Tanith, when she is led to believe she has successfully turned him from evil. Teal'c becomes angry and plans revenge against Tanith. He eventually succeeds in this endeavor but very nearly at the expense of his own life and Jack's.

After Drey'auc's death, Teal'c became involved with the Jaffa warrior Ishta. Ishta joins the Jaffa rebellion but she and Teal'c, both fiercly opinionated, have opposing views on just how the Goa'uld should be fought. Their devotion to their cause and Teal'c's continued loyalty to the Tau'ri keep them apart despite their feelings for each other.

In the episode "Affinity," when Teal'c moves into his own apartment, he becomes involved with his neighbor Krista. Krista causes a great deal of trouble when she accidentally kills her abusive boyfriend using self-defense techniques taught to her by Teal'c. Teal'c is accused of his murder and Krista is kidnapped by The Trust to be used against Teal'c and Daniel. Krista is saved when Daniel agrees to give the trust the translation they wanted in exchange for Krista's life. There is no further mention of Krista, and the implication is left that their relationship is over.
