Events in 2007

Do you have information on a current/upcoming Sci Fi item? Especially if you are a creator or organizer, it would be great if you would add it to this article (and the articles on 2008 and 2009 and so on)!

Remember the neutrality guidelines: even though your item/event may be wonderful, you'll notice that the listings in this article are simple and straightforward. You can include a link to the Official Site: that way, users can get the information straight from the centaur's mouth.  :)

You'll see listings for movies (release dates), tv shows (first run broadcasts), books (publication dates), comic books (publication dates), cons, and more.

Please also include a category for your listing, so people can tell what it is. The top level is good, but a sub-category (like Star Trek) might help as well.

Let's help people feed their need for new Sci Fi!

As the Cloner Said When the Latissimus Dorsi Developed...

"Welcome, back."  ;)

Does it seem to you like the days are getting longer and the years are getting shorter? Well, the year articles are getting longer, at any rate. 2007 is displaying the warning about being too long for some browsers. I could change the article so taht it broke down into 12 articles, one for each month. Is that okay? It seemed inevitable...

Bite-sized morsels

Hi, Bufo,

Your suggestion of going to months is good. Another possibility would be to divide 2007 into two articles, since interest is probably always going to be highest in the current and upcoming section rather than the already-done section. Would either way be more efficient for searching and updating?

Six Months in One, Half a Dozen as the Other

Well, in terms of usability, one could argue that having six months in one article is easier if a user just visually scans ahead to see what's coming. However, I don't think it's that much harder to click a link to move up a month (there would be a link for 2007 September at the bottom of 2007 August, for example, just like we've been doing with the years). I expect (and hope) that a six month segment will grow beyond the 66k limit. It happened this time in less than eight months, and we didn't have very many books or conventions listed, just as two elements that should multiply in the future.

Technically, it is easier for the computer to have two articles than six. That's very minor, though. I like to look ahead: I think it will be necessary to break it down to months as the entries grow. While it's unlikely that, an article created now for the first six months of 2007 will grow much, I'm inclined to split it into months, both for 2007 and for the future.

I think it's forward-looking to get in the habit of splitting them into months now...better to do it before it's necessary, so we'll be prepared for it when it is.  :)

Diving in!

I think you're absolutely right about future growth. Thanks for opening up the discussion. I like the 2007 article and refer to it often.

Cheers,

2007

Hey Bufo, what are your plans for the 2007 article? I noticed you removed all the entries for Jan-Jun. My only concern is having a 20007 article that is nothing but a series of redirects. I think it would be better to turn the listing into an article that discusses the most important events of the year and also links to the main month article. I can also create a sidebar template linking directly to the 2007 months.

What a Difference a Year Makes

I'd love to have the navigation, and I definitely like turning it into a narrative! The split came initially because the article was way byond the "easy to edit limit" of 32k. As Scifipedia grows, I think a month will be a more manageable unit than a year. I expect listings for books and conventions to greatly increase over time, for example. It seems important to have at least the current month and the next month together with full listings: if the 31st falls on a Thursday, I'm sure people will be looking ahead to the weekend.

We're also trying to look ahead to the future, and establish precedent and structure that will support that growth in an entertaining and enlightening way.

Here's what I'm envisioning (inspired by your thoughts) this morning:

1. A narrative overview of the highlights of the year at the top

2. A navigation bar, possibly on the left, that would allow a jump to the narratives for each month. It might need to be repeated

3. Narratives for each month, with a link to the detailed listing for that month

4. Detailed listings for each month, similar to what we've been doing

That's my spontaneous thought for non-current year articles (although I don't think the ones without a lot of listings need to be changed at this point). For the current year, I would want the detailed listings for at least this month and the next month together...maybe that should be a separate article, something like Current Calendar? It would be nice if it had a flashier name.  ;)

Well, that's my off-the-cuff early in the morning.  :) Candy was involved in the initial discussion, I'll direct her here. I'm glad you're enhancing what started as a practical move into a genuine improvement.  :)

Giving the 2007 discussion a home

Hi, everyone. I'm really enjoying the ideas you're coming up with.

A sidebar template would be terrific! And a narrative seems like a great solution, because I agree that an article that is nothing but redirects would be uninviting.

Name ideas? How about Events Calendar? What other possibilities can you think of?

Maybe we could do this in tandem with improvements to the Timeline article series. The main Timeline article could have more navigation features—ways to lead to the timeline material?

Test Case

Thanks for setting this up, Candy!

I was thinking, we could try this first (writing a narrative article and the splits) with the 2006 article. That way, we can work with a completed year (which makes it easier to pick the highlights), and one that is not being visited as often.

2006

A test case sounds like a good plan. We can experiment on 2006 and find out what works best.

—Candy (Cashanundudyub 15:31, 19 August 2007 (EDT))

I see the construction is underway. Looking good so far!

Month Template

I'm not sure if you already noticed but the month template I added to the January 2007 article, etc. is dependent on the various subheads in the article being only the date. Adding the day of the weak eliminates its ability to link to sections of the article and renders it useless. The template is simple and not designed to account for days of the week. I'm not sure how to go about doing that and I have a suspicion it might require at least a dozen more templates to account for all the combination of month start dates and days of the week.

--MarshAngel 17:34, 23 August 2007 (EDT)

Quick Fix

If the day of the week is to be added to the subheads, a new ID will need to be provided for the calendar to link to.

Eg. <div id="January_1"> </div> should precede ==Monday, January 1==

I've already done this for, January 2007.
