TV series

<span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span>

A television series is a group of television programs that are either set in a the same universe or are an anthology.

A series that lasts for for a finite story arc for between 2 and 10 episodes is called a miniseries or a limited-run series.

When it comes to episodic television that lasts for multiple years, there is a difference in usage of the term "television series" between American and British traditions. In American English, each grouping of a single year's production run of episodes is called a "season." Under the British tradition, each production run's body of work is referred to as a separate "series."

The longest-running science fiction series was the original Doctor Who which from 1963 to the 1989 had 700 episodes in its 26 years. The longest-running American sci fi or fantasy series is either Bewitched which has the most episodes (254) or Stargate SG-1, which returned for the highest number of seasons (10).

Television is a medium that lends itself to the series format. A regular weekly time-slot and an audience of regular repeat viewers appeals to both the producing networks, such as NBC, CBS and ABC, among others, and to the advertising sponsors.
