THX 1138 is a 1971 dystopian science fiction film written and directed by George Lucas. The film is the first feature-length film from Lucas and is an adaptation of his 1967 short experimental student film Electronic Labyrinth THX 1138 4EB. The film was produced by Warner Brothers in cooperation with Francis Ford Coppola's production company, American Zoetrope. A novelization of the film was written by Ben Bova and published in 1971.
Plot
THX 1138 tells the story of a nuclear-production-line , THX 1138 (Robert Duvall), living in a future run by an out of touch corporate government; a world where money means more than human life and emotions have been suppressed with drugs. When THX's roommate, LUH 3417, stops taking her drugs, she experiences a resurgence of emotion. She substitutes THX's pills with inert variations and they begin to care for each other and develop a sexual relationship. The two plot to escape the city for a life of freedom but they are both arrested and charged with unauthorized sex and not taking prescribed medication.
THX is imprisoned with other criminals including a programmer SEN 5241 (Donald Pleasance). SEN 5241 has been trying to replace LUH as THXs roomates in revenge for THX reporting him for programming violations. THX and SEN discover a means of escape and along with SRT (Don Pedro Colley). THX tries to find LUH only to discover her identity has been reassigned to a fetus. SEN explores the city's underground network and ultimately decides to return and is recaptired.
THX and SRT continue their attempt to escape but an accident leads to SRTs apparent demise. City police continue to pursue THX but when the expense of his recapture exceeds their budget, they abandon their pursuit, allowing THX to escape to the world above where it seems life is not only possible, but thriving.
