Gabriel Gray aka Sylar is a fictional character on the NBC series Heroes played by Zachary Quinto. Sylar is a serial killer with superhuman powers.
Gabriel Gray was a watchmaker working at his shop, Gray and Sons, in New York when he was approached by Dr. Chandra Suresh who believed he might possess extraordinary abilities. Despite not having displayed anything more unusual than a natural affinity for time pieces, Gabriel was quick to believe he might be special hoping the discovery of hidden powers would elevate him from his insignificant family.

When initial tests proved nothing more than Gabriel's good health, Chandra was ready to move on and find other subjects. Gabriel became angry with Chandra, questioning whether he would treat future subjects like Brian Davis—a man Chandra believed might have telekinetic abilities—in the same way. Determined to prove himself special, he took Davis's information with him when he left.
Gabriel called Davis and when Davis visited his store he introduced himself as Gabriel Sylar after glancing at a watch he'd been fixing with the brand name Sylar. Davis expressed a desire to be rid of his abilities. Sylar identified Davis as being "broken" stating that Chandra was right and that "it is in the brain." He claimed he could fix it; that is was an evolutionary imperative. Sylar then attacked and killed him.
Later, Sylar visited Chandra and displayed powerful telekinetic abilities that exceeded those displayed by Davis. Chandra continued to study him, dubbing him patient zero. The study later fell apart and Chandra broke contact with him. Chandra's son, Mohinder Suresh, witnessed his father's murder at the hand of Sylar in a dream.
Sylar has been using Chandra's list to seek out and kill those with special abilities. FBI agent, Audrey Hanson has been on his trail. One of his most recent murders was that of a married couple in Los Angles. The woman's body was found pinned to the stairs while her husband was frozen with his brain removed. Their daughter, Molly Walker managed to escape but Sylar attempted to kidnap her from police custody. Luckily, he failed but in his escape he almost forced Hanson to kill herself with her own gun. Officer Matt Parkman fired at him but the bullets appeared to have had no effect.
Mohinder Suresh and Eden McCain visited Sylar's New York apartment. There they found a map similar to Chandra's with even more connections indicating he'd found even more people. There were also many books on philosophy, anatomy and Chandra's book, Activating Evolution.
In "Seven Minutes to Midnight", Sylar is witnessed killing waitress Charlie. Sylar cut her head open and removed her brain. Sylar moved on to Claire Bennet's high school where he planned to attack and kill her. He initially mistakes fellow cheerleader Jackie Wilcox for Claire and cuts her head open without touching her.
Realizing he had the wrong girl, he chased Claire but she escaped and he attacked Peter. They both fell off a school building but Sylar survived and escaped. He was shortly apprehended by Eden McCain and the mysterious Haitian.
Sylar is imprisoned inside Mr. Bennet's facility and threatens to go after Claire once he leaves. Eden believes she should use her abilities to force him to kill himself but when she brings in a gun to do so, Sylar breaks through the glass partition and grabs hold of her. Eden shoots herself in the head to prevent him from getting her power of suggestion.
Sylar imprisoned Bennet in his own facility and went after his daughter, Claire. Fortunately, Claire wasn't home at the time and Bennet returned in time before Sylar could hurt his wife. Sylar moved on and tracked down Zane Taylor, a man with the ability to melt metal. He killed Zane and took his power and when Mohinder Suresh visited Zane, Sylar took on his identity. Sylar and Mohinder journeyed to Bozeman, Montana where they found Dale Smither, a woman with extraordinary hearing. Sylar took her power as well. Mohinder eventually realized who he was working with and attempted to kill Sylar but was overcome. He was rescued by Peter Petrelli who was killed by Sylar but later recovered.
Sylar returned to New York and killed painter Isaac Mendez and began painting his own visions of the future. His visions led him to believe he was going to be responsible for a nuclear explosion in the city. He visited his mother hoping to impress her with his abilities but his powers proved terrifying and in her horror a struggle ensued resulting in her death. Sylar's encounter with his mother made it clear that a part of his longing to be special was due to his mother's inability to expect anything less.
Hiro Nakamura and Ando Masahashi attempted to kill Sylar while he was still distracted by his mother's death but failed in their attempt. He later overheard a conversation between Peter Petrelli, Mr. Bennet, and Theodore Sprague and used the information to have Ted arrested. He overturned Ted's transport and took his powers but later visions of the future led him to realize that he wasn't the bomb, that Peter, was actually responsible. The two faced off but it wasn't Peter who killed him, but Hiro, with a sword, as foretold in the 9th Wonder comics. Sylar's body disappeared from Kirby Plaza where the showdown with Peter occurred.
Season 2
In the series second season, it was revealed that he was saved by Candice Wilmer. Candice helped Sylar recover from his wounds in a paradise illusion. He appeared to have lost his abilities but it is unclear whether the situation is permanent or a result of his injuries. Candice assured him he would regain his abilities. After discovering her talent for illusion, he killed her and attempted to take her ability. He was unable to express her talent however and after escaping his remote location he was picked up on a road in Mexico by Maya and Alejandro Herrera.
Sylar created division between Maya and Alejandro determining that if he couldn't have his own abilities he'd manipulate hers. He drove a wedge between the siblings ultimately guiding Maya to control her own abilities to eliminate her need for her brother who was previously the only who could stop her from killing others when she lost control. Alejandro attempted to confront Sylar only to be killed.
Unaware of her brother's death, Maya and Sylar traveled to New York to the home of Mohinder Suresh where they both hoped to find a cure, Maya to end her deadly powers and Sylar to regain his.
Powers
Sylars original ability was to see how things work by looking at them. The talent helped him repairing watches, diagnosing the problem immediately. After working with Dr. Suresh, he learned of Brian Davis and on meeting him determined that he was broken and seeing his telekinetic display, killed him and took his power. There have been hints that Sylar actually eats the brains of his victims to gain their powers.
It is possible Sylar's ability is similar to the Cestodapetitus, the ability of a tapeworm to acquire knowledge by consuming the remains of another tapeworm.
Sylar displayed far more control over his telekinesis than Brian did. It is the ability he uses most often, particularly in the murder of his victims. He uses his talent almost surgically to slice open the heads of his victims. His second acquired ability came from an unnamed individual in Chicago, He got the ability to freeze objects. e has not been seen to use this ability often though he displayed it, fighting against Peter in "Five Years Gone". It is unclear what ability he got when he murdered James Walker and his wife.
Sylar acquired his eidetic memory from waitress Charlie. He used this ability to hijack and learn to drive a trailer in the graphic novels. Other acquired powers include the ability liquefy metal with a touch, a power he acquired from Zane Taylor, and superhuman hearing from Dale Smither.
In a version of the future, Sylar acquired Claire's regenerative abilities resulting in Hiro's inability to kill him. Hiro was able to send a message back in time to Peter to save Claire and prevent Sylar from gaining her ability. In another future, Sylar acquired several other abilities; Nathan's flight, Candice Wilmer's illusionary abilities and D.L.'s phasing. Also in "Five Years Gone", he eventually acquired Claire's abilities.
