Surface

<span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span>

Surface (2005) is a TV series created by Josh Pate and Jonas Pate that premiered in fall 2005 on NBC.

What would life be like if new invasive species began appearing in Earth's oceans? This is the basic premise of Surface. The show follows marine biologist Dr. Laura Daughtery (Lake Bell), Rich Connelly (Jay R. Ferguson), and Miles Barnett (Carter Jenkins) as they become the first to encounter the new ocean-based lifeforms.

On a research mission in her submersible, Daughtery discovers a field of craters deep off the coast of California. When her gauges begin to malfunction, she encounters a massive sea creature she cannot identify but that she hypothesizes is a new mammalian species. In her efforts to discover the truth behind the species' origin, she's joined by Rich Connelly, a Louisiana native who recently lost his brother to one of these creatures. As the series progresses, they uncover a far-reaching conspiracy involving genetic research and manipulation.

On the East Coast of the United States in North Carolina, troubled teenager Miles Barnett captures an unusual egg he finds floating on the ocean surface after he falls off his water skis and is abandoned by his friends. When the egg hatches in his home aquarium, a lizard-like creature with an unusual ability to affect electrical appliances emerges, wreaking havoc everywhere it goes, and getting Miles in trouble with his parents and the law. Despite all this, Nim (Nimrod), as he calls the creature, triggers Miles' protectiveness.

The characters bonded with each other as they become isolated by their pursuit of the mysterious creatures and by the skepticism of both friends and the public alike. The characters began to show real growth as the season finale approached, and the series' scripts overcame an initial awkwardness. With progressively more interesting storylines, the show captured a small but loyal following.

After the close of the show's short but complete season, NBC did not list Surface on its fall 2006 schedule, despite the efforts of fans petitioning for its renewal.
