Story Collections

<span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span>

A story collection is a volume containing short works of fiction, typically by a single author. A collection differs from an anthology, which is also a compilation of short pieces, but written by numerous authors.

Anthologies often embroider on a theme, such as the book In the Shadow of Evil, edited by Martin H. Greenberg and John Helfers (published by DAW Books, 2005), which contains fourteen original stories of times and places where darkness holds sway and those on the side of good must survive to fight another day. Some of the authors who contributed to the volume include Jean Rabe, Jane Lindskold, Tanya Huff, Brooks Peck, Gregory Benford, and Jody Lynn Nye.

An example of a story collection is Looking for Jake by China Mieville, published by Del Rey Books (2005). The stories range in length from short story through novella, with each story standing alone as far as subject matter. A story collection does not often keep to a theme, but instead showcases a particular author's talents and interests.
