Steven Taylor is a character who appeared regularly in the second and third seasons of the long-running series Doctor Who. The Doctor, Ian, Barbara, and Vicki encountered Steven (played by actor Peter Purves) on the planet Mechanus in the 1965 story "The Chase." He was being held prisoner by the evil Mechanoids. A space pilot from Earth, he had crash-landed on the planet two years earlier. One of the Doctor Who spin off novels suggests that he was from the 23rd century, but no actual date for his origin was given in the television series itself.

Steven joined the TARDIS crew, journeying with the Doctor until the 1965 story "The Savages." At the end of that story, he decided to stay to help ensure the peaceful co-existence of the savages and the elders.

Stubborn and with a distinct sense of right and wrong, Steven became a strong central character who challenged the Doctor's sometimes selfish motives and occasionally even carried the day himself when the Doctor wasn't around.
