Stephen Russell Bissette(b. 1955) lives and works in Marlboro, Vermont, with his wife Marjory and son Daniel. He toiled in the comic book industry for almost a quarter of a century as a cartoonist, writer, editor, and publisher. Bissette remains best known for his work on such titles as Sojourn, Heavy Metal, Sgt. Rock, the graphic adaptation of the Steven Spielberg film 1941 (with Rick Veitch) and DC Comics, Saga of the Swamp Thing (1982–1987).
He co-created, edited, and published ten volumes of the Eisner Award–winning horror comics anthology Taboo (1989–1995) and earned the comics industry Inkpot Award for Superior Career Achievement in 1998, just before the market's collapse led to his retirement from the field the following year.
Since 1990, Bissette has illustrated numerous limited edition books by authors such as Neil Gaiman, Douglas E. Winter, Joe R. Lansdale, Rick Hautala, Christopher Golden, Nancy A. Collins, Joe Citro, and others, and painted the cover art for the Barrel Entertainment DVD Last House on Dead End Street.
He co-created the character of John Constantine, played by Keanu Reeves in the 2005 film Constantine, and worked briefly on Mirage Studios’ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles—the character Tokka that appeared in the second TMNT feature, Secret of the Ooze, was based upon his drawings.
As a writer, Bissette's work includes the 1992 Bram Stoker Award–winning novella "Aliens: Tribes" and short fiction for Words Without Pictures, Hellboy: Odd Jobs, Working for the Man and other titles. He wrote the movie guide We Are Going to Eat You! The Third World Cannibal Movies and co-authored Comic Book Rebels and The Monster Book: Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
His articles have appeared in numerous film magazines, including Video Watchdog, Deep Red, Ecco, Fangoria, and Gorezone. Bissette's papers are now housed at the Henderson State University Library's Special Collections in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.
