Stefen Fangmeier (b. December 9, 1960 El Paso, Texas) is an American Academy Award-nominated visual effects supervisor and director. Fangmeir made his directorial debut with the fantasy film Eragon. He'd previously worked as an assistant director on the sci fi films Galaxy Quest and Dreamcatcher.
Fangmeier attended the California State University of Dominguez Hills where he received his degree in Computer Science. He then worked with Aerospace Corporation as a system's programmer and image processing analyst and later at the National Center for Supercomputing Application (NCSA) at the University of Illinois as a visualization project manager. He began using his skills in the entertainment industry working with Digital Production and later with Mental Images where he worked as Director of Production.
In 1990, Fangmeier joined Industrial Light & Magic (ILM). His first major film was Terminator 2: Judgement Day on which he served as computer graphics shot supervisor. Her served the same role on Hook and also worked on Jurassic Park, and Casper. Fangmeir earned his first Oscar nomination for his work on the tornado disaster film Twister. Other projects include Speed 2: Cruise Control, Small Soldiers, Saving Private Ryan, Galaxy Quest, The Perfect Storm, The Bourne Identity, Signs, Dreamcatcher, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World and Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. Fangmeier's work has earned him three Saturn Award nominations and he won three BAFTA film awards for his work on Saving Private Ryan, The Perfect Storm and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.
