Starship Troopers is a 1997 movie based on Robert A. Heinlein's novel Starship Troopers. Casper Van Dien stars as Johnny Rico, a high school graduate who decides to become a true citizen by joining the military, following in the footsteps of his girlfriend, Carmen (Denise Richards). Johnn realizes he may have made a mistake but it's too late to quit, an asteroid sent from the planet klendathu hits his hometown in Buenos Aires and kills his family. Now thirsty for vengeance, Johnny is sent out along with other soldiers to destroy the alien planet's inhabitants, large insectoid creatures.

The movie has an underlying antiwar theme that occasionally gets lost in the battle scenes which earned the film an Academy Award-nomination for its visual effects.
