Starfleet is a fictional organization in the Star Trek universe. It is the scientific, diplomatic, and military arm of the United Federation of Planets, of which Earth and Vulcan are founding members.

While the rankings with which fans are familiar (Admiral, Captain, Ensign) are similar to the US Navy, Starfleet is more than a military service. It is involved with diplomatic and exploratory missions, and (in the Earth-based portion) seems to have incorporated some of the roles of both NASA and the State Department.

Earth's part of Starfleet is based in San Francisco, California. There are many divisions, and it has been used in the TV series, movies, books, comics, and more.
