Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (19931999) was a syndicated TV series created by Rick Berman and Michael Piller that told the story of a small Federation space station that orbits the newly liberated planet of Bajor. Deep Space Nine, also commonly referred to as DS9, is the fourth Star Trek series and the third live-action series.

The station is strategically located at the entrance of a wormhole that opens to the far side of the galaxy, the Gamma quadrant. Avery Brooks stars as Benjamin Sisko (first Commander Sisko and then later Captain Sisko), the Federation officer in charge of the station. He is joined by several other Starfleet officers, most notably Commander Worf (played by Michael Dorn, formerly of Star Trek: The Next Generation). The crew also includes holdovers from the Bajoran authority, including Odo (Rene Auberjonois), a shapeshifter, and Major Kira Nerys (Nana Visitor).

Plot

Recently freed from Cardassian occupation, the planet Bajor invited Starfleet to take over the abandoned Cardassian space station of Terak Nor. Star Fleet agrees to rebuild the station despite the difficulties of dealing with the wary Bajoran people. The station, renamed Deep Space Nine was once a trading hub and under Star Fleet's governance, becomes one again due to the discovery of a stable wormhole leading to the Gamma Quadrant.

The Gamma Quadrant is dominated by three species, the Vorta, The Founders and genetically engineered soldiers Jem'Hadar, known together as The Dominon. The Dominion interpreted the new travelers to their region of space as the beginnings of an invasion and decided to strike first, invading the Alpha Quadrant to bring it under their rule. A war broke out between forces in the alpha quadrant and the Dominion, and DS9 was the frontline.
