Stanisław Lem (b. September 12, 1921, Lvov, Poland – March 27, 2006) is a Polish author best known for his novel Solaris which has been twice adapted for the screen. After Soviet occupation of his country, Lem studied medicine at the Lvov Medical Institute. It was not his first choice, but when the Germans occupied his hometown, he worked as a mechanic. He later returned to medicine during a second Soviet occupation. When his hometown was no longer a part of Poland, he moved to Krakow where he was repatriated and studied medicine at the Jagiellonian University. Between 1948 and 1950 Lem worked as a junior research assistant at the Konserwatorium Naukoznawcze.
Lem's short stories were first published in science fiction magazines. His first science fiction novel, The Man from Mars was serialized in the magazine New World of Adventures.
