Mr. Spock, also known simply as Spock, is one of the most iconic characters in Star Trek, and the first Vulcan in the series. Played by Leonard Nimoy, Mr. Spock was the First Officer of the Starship Enterprise. He also served as Science Officer under Captain Christopher Pike.
Spock was born in the year 2230 in the city of Shi'Kahr on the planet Vulcan. Vulcans are known for their advanced intellect and philosophy based on logic, and near total control over the emotional side of their psyche. Although he is recognized for his Vulcan characteristics, and identifies himself as such, Spock is actually half-human. His mother, Amanda Grayson, was the human wife of the Vulcan Ambassador Sarek. By comparison to humans, Spock appears to be logical and unemotional. However, as a Vulcan, he was far from perfect in that regard and constantly struggled to balance emotion and logic.
Spock's relationship with his father was conflicted. Spock joined Starfleet against his father's wishes.
Like all Vulcans, Spock was smarter and stronger than humans. He had some telepathic abilities, and was able to perform what was referred to as the "Vulcan Mind Meld" on sentient creatures, which basically merged his mind with another's temporarily. Spock also was a master of the "Vulcan Neck Pinch" which allowed him to render someone unconscious without violence merely by squeezing a certain spot on the neck.
Spock had a special bond with his Commanding Officer, Captain James T. Kirk, which developed over the years. He also came to consider Chief Medical Officer Dr. Leonard McCoy a good friend as well, despite their many philosophical differences. Many considered the relationship between these three Starfleet Officers to be the hallmark of the original series, and it was carried intact through the first six Star Trek movies.
The character Edith Keeler once said that Spock's place would always be at Kirk's side. This would seem to validate those who see Spock as sidekick character. However, since Spock would outlive Kirk by decades, it seems that this analysis was flawed. Spock would still be alive working on Romulus towards unification of the Romulan and Vulcan people in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
He had an elder brother, Sybok, who rejected logic and was banished for heresy.
