A spirit guide is an entity which provides guidance during an individual's life to further spiritual awareness or enlightenment. The term is typically used by Spiritualist Churches, psychics, mediums, and some Native American belief systems. Descriptions of spirit guides, their origin and purpose vary dramatically. For some, a spirit guide acts in the manner of a guardian angel protecting and guiding individuals down ideal paths.

Some mediums, and psychics believe spirit guides are individuals who have lived previous lives and have returned to aid others to learn the same lessons they have. In some beliefs, these individuals have been freed from the reincarnation cycle by attaining enlightenment and watch over individuals.

Though some spirit guides take on human appearances, in some Native American traditions, spirit guides are represented by animals.

Methods on how to contact a spirit guide vary ranging from channeling, to astral projection, visualization and vision quests.
