Things are looking good for Peter Parker and his love, Mary Jane Watson. Peter's been selling pictures to the Daily Bugle for years, he's doing great in his science class, and he's getting up the nerve to ask MJ to marry him. Mary Jane is third-billed in a Broadway show, with her name on the marquee. Her acting career is taking off. Spider-Man is the toast of New York, a popular superstar.
If this was a fairy tale, you'd expect to see "And they lived happily ever after" written across the screen.
But it's not. This is Spider-Man, and the course of his life is as tangled as...a spider's web.
Flint Marko escapes from jail. Comic fans know this means the story is about to get grittier. Marko climbs through an apartment window, where his young daughter is sleeping. She has tubes running to her nose. He has a confrontation with his ex, who tells him that he can't hide there, since he's an escaped convict. Their daughter over-hears, and he promises her that he will get the money to help her get well, by any means necessary. His daughter gives him a locket as a keepsake.
As Marko is fleeing, he scales a fence into an experimental facility. He falls into a large pit, where a dematerialization test is about to be conducted. The scientists are aware of a change in the composition of what is in the sandy-bottomed testing zone, but assume it is a bird and continue. The whirling mechanism literally dissolves Flint.
Through some effect of the procedure, the sand merges with the convict's body. Marko's body painstakingly reforms, right down to the striped shirt he took from the apartment. He has become the villain known as Sandman.
