Southland Tales is a 2007 film written and directed by Richard Kelly, best known for his work on Donnie Darko. The film is set in Los Angeles and stars Dwayne Johnson(The Rock) as Boxer Santaros/Jericho Cane; Sarah Michelle Gellar as adult film star Krysta Now; Seann William Scott as Ronald/Roland Taverner; and Mandy Moore as Madeline Frost Santaros. The film follows the lives of several individuals over a three-day period leading up the the 4th of July 2008.
Summary
The film is set in 2008 as Los Angeles simmers in a heat wave and nears social, economic and environmental disaster following a nuclear attack that wipes out Abilene, Texas. In what amounts to a police state, action-film star Boxer Santaros awakes in the desert, suffering from amnesia. He winds up in the custody of Krysta Now, nee Kapowski, a porn star/entrepreneur. She convinces him that he is working with her and trying to get financing for a new movie. His and her real lives seem to resemble the plot of her script, which she says is his. Meanwhile, Hermosa Beach police officer Ronald Taverner finds himself in the company of Neo-Marxist rebels, who try to persuade him to impersonate his twin brother, Roland, who is in a coma. They have a vague plot to embarrass the Republican candidate for vice president, whose daughter happens to be the wife of Boxer Santaros. Meanwhile, the German firm Treer Corp. has developed the technology to generate wireless energy from what is called "fluid karma" and has built a massive generating station off the coast of Santa Monica, Calif.
