Solomon Grundy is a fictional comic book super villain owned by DC Comics. He is often an opponent of the Golden Age Green Lantern (Alan Scott) and the Justice Society of America (JSA).

One of the spookier and macabre villains, Solomon Grundy is a swamp creature of tremendous power, similar in temperament and feel to the old Universal horror movie series' Frankenstein Monster.

He appears to be a large man, about seven and a half feet tall, with chalk white skin, superhuman strength, and a nearly indestructible body. He doesn’t need to eat, sleep, or breath, and has a nasty habit of returning to life if he does manage to get destroyed. The theory is that you can’t kill him, because he’s not really alive.

Grundy has been destroyed and reborn several times, usually while trying to kill a member of the JSA. Each reborn Grundy is different than the last, both in disposition and intelligence. The original Grundy was a real villain who hated Green Lantern intensely. Another Grundy was child-like and gentle, developing a crush on Alan Scott’s daughter Jade and would do anything for her. The Grundy that was born next is a malicious, truly evil creature who caused massive death and destruction in Opal City before disappearing.

Recent Grundys

During the crossover limited series Infinite Crisis (2006), Solomon Grundy is killed by Superboy Prime, who vaporizes him with his heat vision. The next Grundy was born strangely intelligent, and hatched a scheme that involves the theft of Red Tornado’s android body. His end game was to get Professor Ivo to place him in a robotic body so he could end his continual cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. This time he was destroyed by Red Tornado, who tears him apart with hurricane force winds.

It’s only a matter of time before Solomon Grundy returns again.

Character Origin

Early Appearance
Early Appearance

In the year 1894, a wealthy man named Cyrus Gold is robbed and murdered. His body is dumped into Slaughter Swamp. For the next fifty years, the plants and bacteria of the swamp congealed around the decaying corpse, soon nothing more than a skeleton. The unexplainable happens, eventually bringing it to something roughly equivalent to life. The original creature was mindless, given to fits of murderous rage that may be the remnants of what Gold was feeling at the time of his death. The murderous zombie-like monster was given his name by a criminal, who named him after an old child’s nursery rhyme:

Solomon Grundy,
Born on Monday,
Christened on Tuesday,
Married on Wednesday,
Took ill on Thursday,
Worse on Friday,
Died on Saturday,
Buried on Sunday:
This is the end
Of Solomon Grundy.
