Unlike other Goa'uld who take on the identity of local gods, Sokar took on the identity of the Devil on several words. He even played Satan for medieval Christians taken from Earth. It was easy for them to believe as Sokar once inhabited the body of an Unas.
Sokar plotted a massive attack against the System Lords, amassing a vast fleet with the intention of attacking key System Lords to upset the balance of power. His most hated enemy was Apophis. His battle against the System Lord resulted in the loss of much of Apophis' forces. Sokar pursued Apophis but he was taken to Earth by SG-1 Where he was revealed to be dying as a result of severe torture. Sokar attacked Eath's stargate using a particle accelerator and demanded his return. Apophis died on Earth but his body was handed over to Sokar who revived him and sent him to hell, or rather, Ne'tu, a terraformed moon in orbit of Sokar's homeworld Del'mak. The moon's core is exposed and designed to be a miserable prison for his enemies.
When SG-1 visited Ne'tu with the Tok'ra, Martouf in order to rescue Jacob Carter who'd been captured, they learned of Sokar's plans to attack the System Lords. The Tok'ra undertook a plan that targeted Ne'tu's core causing the moon the explode. The explosion destroyed Sokar's ship in orbit, killing him. In his absence, Apophis took over Sokar's domain.
