Soft science fiction is a subgenre of science fiction, in the same way that space opera is a subgenre, which doesn't necessarily conform to hard scientific principles. It is often used to refer to science fiction where the "science" that the extrapolation in the story deals with is in one of the "soft" sciences like psychology where quantification is not as exact as it is in mathematics or physics.
