Smallville, a TV series prequel to the classic Superman tale, debuted October 16, 2001, with Clark Kent as a teenager, just learning who he is and what he can do. His parents Jonathan and Martha Kent and his friends Chloe Sullivan and Pete Ross, his love Lana Lang, his future nemesis Lex Luthor, and his future love Lois Lane help Clark battle weekly villains who are mostly kryptonite-caused human mutations.

In the Superman comics mythology, Smallville (DC Comics) was the small town that young Clark Kent grew up in before relocating to Metropolis (DC Comics) and becoming Superman. In the Smallville TV Series, characters and elements of the series are taken from the Silver Age Superboy and Superman comic books, as well as the DC Comics Universe in general. Despite all this, no one ever refers to the Tom Welling character as "Superboy" or "Superman", as the series is meant to deal only with Clark Kent's pre-costume days.

The story follows Clark learning how to deal with his new secret while balancing a normal life of a teenager. As he grows closer to Lana, he moves farther away from his once-friend Lex. Both relationships test his ability to keep his secret in order to protect those close to him.

Though executive producers Miles Millar and Alfred Gough promised "no tights, no flights" when the series first went to air, allusions to both have been made in recent seasons. Throughout the series, many other references and inside jokes about the popular Superman lore have been made, from the heavy presence of red and blue in Clark's wardrobe to the special guest appearance of Christopher Reeve.
