Plot

When Quinn Mallory, a college student discovers he has successfully created a gateway to another dimension he tests the device and winds up in a parallel dimension very similar to his own. An alternate Quinn attempts to warn him of a problem with the remote timer he's invented to control the sliding process but he misses the explanation trying to return to his own dimension.

He invites his professor and best friend, Wade for a demonstration of the machine. He sets the timer for five hours and increases the power to accommodate the extra travelers. The Vortex, bigger than the previous one, accidentally pulls in a car, driven by singer Rembrandt 'Crying Man' Brown and all four find themselves in a parallel San Francisco in the midst of an ice age. They try to wait uncomfortably for the timer to countdown to zero but a tornado heading their way prompts them to activate the remote timer early and slide out. They appear to have returned home but soon discover that the world they're in is not their own.

They keep sliding to new worlds where things are sometimes only slightly different and some vastly different and dangerous hoping the next world they slide into will be home.

Cast Changes

The series originally starred Jerry O'Connell as genius Quinn Mallory who builds a machine in his basement capable of traveling between dimensions. Joining Quinn on his journeys, were his professor Maximillian Arturo, ( John Rhys-Davies), his best friend Wade Wells (Sabrina Lloyd), and singer Rembrandt Brown (Cleavant Derricks). Rhys Davies left the series after its second season. Unconfirmed information from Dimension of Continuity suggests he was fired for his criticism of the writing. Sabrina Lloyd also left the show in 1997 shortly after Kari Wuhrer was added to the cast as Maggie Beckett. Charlie O'Connell, Jerry O'Connell's brother joined the cast in 1998 as Colin Mallory, Quinn's brother who'd been living in another dimension. In 1999, both brothers left the show, having moved on during the long hiatus between the fourth and fifth season. Robert Floyd replaced Jerry O'Connell and Tembi Locke joined the cast as Dr. Diana Davis leaving Cleavant Derricks as the only original cast member when the show ended in 2000.
