Skiffy

<span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span>

Skiffy is a common internet slang term to refer to either Scifi.com or Scifi Channel itself. It originates from a phonetic pronunciation of "SciFi": "Ski" (hard C) and "Fee" (soft I) = "Skiffy"

Skiffy is a derogatory term in science fiction fandom. Roughly defined, skiffy may be considered that which gives science fiction a bad name.

It is used to refer to patently bad, low-quality works that try to pass themselves off as science fiction. Most in fandom deride the poor quality of skiffy as one of the main reasons why mainstream media views science fiction works as a lesser genre in literature and not to be taken seriously.

The word "skiffy" itself is the result of a purposeful mispronunciation of the term, "sci fi"; a reflection of those unfamiliar with the traditions and quality tenants of well-crafted science fiction who try to create sci fi in a poorly thought-out way.

Most "skiffy" is in the form of poorly conceived television or film aimed at juvenile audiences. Examples include, Manimal and Plan 9 from Outer Space.

Skiffy is not to be confused with camp science fiction, which purposely plays up an intentional appearance of low quality for humorous value.
