Sir Cedric Hardwicke (February 19, 1893 – August 6, 1964) Acclaimed British actor, knighted in 1934 for outstanding performances on the London stage, who often wasted his talents in Hollywood playing sophisticated villains. He did lend some class to The Ghoul (1933), On Borrowed Time (1939, as Death), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939), The Invisible Man Returns (1940), The Ghost of Frankenstein (1942) and Invisible Agent (1942), and he memorably contributed the superb opening narration to George Pal’s production of The War of the Worlds (1953). Despite his many successes, he died in near-poverty.
