Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World (April 3, 1999May 13, 2002) is a steampunk television series based loosely on the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's 1912 Novel, The Lost World. It tells the tale of a band of early twentieth century explorers who discover a lost world, cut off from the rest of the planet. Filmed in Australia, the series aired for three seasons and was canceled in 2002.

Plot

Acquisitive treasure hunter Marguerite Krux finances the expedition of Professor George Edward Challenger, a scientist who hopes to prove his wild theories to his skeptical peers. Adventurer Lord John Richard Roxton joins the expedition as its knowledgeable protector and American journalist Edward T. Malone offers his aid in documenting the journey hoping to make his career.

The group travels to South America where the expedition meets with disaster when their hot air balloon crashes into the jungle. They find themselves trapped on a vast but isolated plateau where species, such as deadly dinosaurs, long gone from the rest of the planet, thrive. They soon discover they aren't the only humans. They discover a savvy young woman, Veronica Layton, whose parents were part of a research group visiting the area ten years prior. Her parents disappeared in strange circumstances and Veronica has survived with the aid of a local tribe.

Challenger and his team come to realize the plateau is a magnet for countless strange activities. They come across Spanish conquistadors lost in time, cold loving aliens determined to overtake the planet and numerous other strange forces. Towards the end of the series, they were joined by another young woman, Finn, who came to them from a horrible future. No longer only faced with day to day survival, with knowledge of what occurs in the future, they must escape the plateau to prevent it.

The group never fulfilled their goal, however, as the series was canceled at the end of season three, leaving the story at a cliffhanger. There was some attempt to produce a fourth season but financial constraints prevented it from happening.
