Plot

SG-1 visits P8X-987, Hanka in hopes of observing a black hole. On arrival however, they stumble upon a dead body that appears to have succumbed to a disease. No one seems to be alive anywhere. They find SG-7 in the observatory, all dead of the same disease.

A decontamination area is set up in the barracks on the planet and SG-1is decontaminated and checked out. They put on biohazard suits and begin to search for survivors and tag the bodies they find. While doing so, Teal'c and O'Neill find a young girl. They take her back to the barracks and Dr. Janet Fraiser examines her and finds her healthy but with traces of naquadah in her blood. She is unable to determine how or why she survived.

Carter forms an immediate bond with her and the team decides to take the girl back with them. Carter determines someone needs to stay, observe, and photograph the black hole. O'Neill and Teal'c decide to remain behind.

At Stargate Command, the girl is given a room of her own. When Carter attempts to leave for a while, the girl holds on to her asks her not to go. Carter eventually gets the girl to tell her her name, Cassandra. Cassandra soon begins to complain of chest pain and Carter takes her to the infirmary where Fraiser discovers her potassium levels are low. Cassandra collapses and while listening to her heart, Dr. Fraiser hears a strange sound. A chest x-ray reveals a strange object attached to her heart. Deeper analysis determines that the object is made out of iron, potassium, and naquadah. The naquadah is separated from the potassium by a thin layer of fatty tissue. The object is capable of stopping her heart at any time.

Carter decides to do a test with a microscopic amount of potassium and naquadah and discovers that the two elements in combination react violently and results in a massive explosion. Daniel and Dr. Fraiser determine that discovering Cassandra on Hanka was a Goa'uld setup created to make them believe they were responsible for the catastrophe knowing they would take Cassandra back. through the stargate. When her heart stopped, the SGC would use electricity to resuscitate her and turn on the device in her chest. As the fatty tissue between the two sides of the device decay, the potassium and naquadah will interact and destroy the SGC.

On Hanka, Jack and Teal'c observe the solar eclipse. During their observations, they note a small object on approach. Teal'c recognizes is it as a go'auld attack vessel belonging to Nirrti. They try to get to the Stargate as Teal'c explains that an emissary from Nirrti was sent to negotiate peace with Apophis regarding a stargate he'd taken possession of. The negotiation was a ploy and the stargate was destroyed once the emissary entered it. They realize they must prevent Cassandra from going through the gate.

After discussing the issue with the president, it is determined that Cassandra would be sent back through the stargate while they still have time. As they approach the gate, Cassandra collapses and slips into a coma. O'Neill and Teal'c return and urge them to get Cassandra away from the stargate,

They decide to take her to an abandoned nuclear facility approximately twenty minutes away from the base. Carter decides to take her down to the lower level herself via the elevator. She takes Cassandra to a bare room and tells her she'll be right back but is devastated at having to leave her. She returns to the elevator but is unable to keep going she returns to Cassandra and decides to stay with her.

On the upper level, O'Neill and Daniel watch as the time counts down towards the detonation of the device. The clock reaches zero but nothing happens. Carter explains that when they got far away from the stargate Cassandra woke from her coma and she knew it would be ok.

The object in Cassandra's chest shrinks and is reabsorbed into her system. She remains on Earth where Dr. Fraiser cares for her until qualified parents can be found. O'Neill determines that all children should have a dog and gives one to Cassandra as a gift.
