Singularity (Astrophysics)

Singularity is a term closely related to the concept of a mathematical singularity where the equations describing gravitation and the curvature of space-time reach an infinity point. In Science Fiction, the most often seen singularity is that which is hypothesized to exist at the center of a black hole; this singularity cannot be viewed from outside the black hole, since it is behind an event horizon. (Note that the words singularity and black hole are not interchangable; a singularity lies inside the black hole and cannot be observed). Another astrophysical singularity of great interest is the instant when the universe had infinite density and zero size at the moment of the big bang.

Sometimes a singularity may be employed as a power source, such as the Time Lords' use in Doctor Who. Star Trek: The Next Generation and other shows in the Star Trek universe mention that the Romulans use an artifically created singularity in their ships for such a purpose.

See black hole.
