The Silver Surfer is a fictional superhero character.

Without a doubt, one of the strangest comic book ideas of the Silver Age of Comics, Lee and Kirby's Silver Surfer is an alien being that flies through space on a silver surf board, a humanoid figure encased in a silver coating, like an off color academy award. The Surfer is reckoned with as a very powerful character, the master of "the power cosmic" which is powerful enough to challenge a being of almost any size and power. He hurtles through space at faster than light speeds, can manipulate time, energy, and molecules in any way he can imagine, and can emit huge amounts of cosmic energy for both destructive and creative purposes.

He seems a wise philosopher, an alien presence seeking to understand our world, whose exposure to the human race awakened his own emotions and compassion suppressed by his cosmic master. He seems a pure innocent, a force for good, ever exasperated with the human race and the brutality of most humanoid species, at the same time, always carrying the guilt of his actions while he was in the service of Galactus, the devourer of worlds.

Origin

Norrin Radd lived on the utopian world of Zenn-La, where all problems are solved and there is never any real adventure. When Galactus, the planet devourer, came to Zenn-La, the population, not used to handling a real crises, was confused and in a panic at the prospect of their imminent destruction. Norrin was the only one with a cool enough head and daring to fly a spaceship out to Galactus and try to talk him out of devouring his world. In the end, in return for Galactus sparing of Zenn-La, Norrin agreed to serve Galactus as his herald, seeking out other worlds for Galactus to consume. Galactus encased Norrin in a silver casing, gave him control over something called "The Power Cosmic", and a flying board that responded to his mental command. Unknown to Norrin at the time, Galactus also deadened the Surfer's conscience, so the destruction of populated worlds would not bother him overmuch.

Enemies: Mephisto, Thanos, Doctor Doom

Allies: The Fantastic Four, Shalla-Bal, Alicia Masters

Comics

The Silver Surfer first appeared in issues 48-50 of the Fantastic Four, in a storyline called The Coming of Galactus. The story, written by Stan Lee and drawn by Jack Kirby, was particularly popular with both fans and comic creators, and was dubbed "The Galactus Trilogy" by the comic book community. After becoming a recurring guest star in The Fantastic Four comic, the Surfer soon had his own comic book which lasted 18 issues. He has starred in several series, mini-series, and graphic novels since then.

The plot of the "Galactus Trilogy" established the Silver Surfer's place and role in the Marvel Comics Universe. The story is the basis for the second Fantastic Four movie, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007).

Spoiler Warning: Plot details and/or information about the ending follow. If you wish to enjoy the work first, stop reading here and return at another time.

The relationship between the Silver Surfer and Galactus worked well, until the Norrin found Earth and decided it was a suitable feeding ground for his master. While the Fantastic Four worked to stop Galactus, the Surfer met the blind sculptress, Alicia Masters. Alicia seemed to re-awaken the Surfer's conscience. He turned against Galactus and tried to stop him from destroying Earth.

The Silver Surfer failed to stop Galactus, who was the very source of his power. Fortunately, the usually neutral Watcher took an interest in Earth, and enabled the Human Torch of the Fantastic Four to find something called the "Ultimate Nullifier" which seemed to be one of the few weapons of which even Galactus was afraid. Galactus left Earth unharmed, but before he went he erected a shield around earth that would only stop the Silver Surfer, thereby imprisoning him on Earth.

Eventually, the Silver Surfer managed to escape the barrier, and has become a cosmic player on the galactic stage.

Movies

The Silver Surfer was featured in the second Fantastic Four movie, entitled *Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007) The character was depicted by digital effects, but voiced by actor Laurence Fishburne.

Paul Essienbre voiced the Silver Surfer in his own animated series in 1998.
