Sightings was a TV series that investigated real-life paranormal phenomena. The stylish series was presented in a documentary/news format with a host (Tim White) introducing and narrating stories about real-life supernatural occurrences. The stories were told through interviews with witnesses and experts, as well as dramatic reenactments.
The series began as a few specials airing on the Fox Network in October 1991 and February 1992, featuring the topics of UFOs and ghosts, respectively. Ratings were good and led to the creation of a weekly half-hour series that aired from April 1992 to July 1993. The format changed during the first season from one topic per episode to three topics per episode. This format remained during Season 2. Topics included UFOs, ghosts, psychics, near-death experiences (NDEs), bigfoot, lake monsters, and other supernatural phenomena, as well as some science news. Fox aired back-to-back episodes in an hour block from February to June 1993.
Over a year later, in the fall of 1994, the series returned in syndication with all-new weekly episodes. The format changed to one-hour episodes with usually four to five segments (or topics). After two seasons in first-run syndication, the series was picked up by The Sci Fi Channel for its fifth and final season in 1996. The Sci Fi Channel also aired a few specials in 1998. Repeats of the series continued to air sporadically on the channel until 2003. Over 100 episodes were produced and aired. The main motto of the show was, "No mystery is closed to an open mind." Another motto associated with the show was, "Beyond imagination lies the truth." The series was produced by Ann Daniel Productions and Fair Dinkum Productions (Henry Winkler, executive producer). It was distributed by Paramount.
The air dates were as follows:
Specials: October 17, 1991 (two half-hour specials on Fox); February 28, 1992 (two half-hour specials on Fox);
Weekly Series: April 1992 – July 1993 (Seasons 1 and 2 on Fox); September 1994 – September 1996 (Seasons 3 and 4 in syndication); September 1996 – September 1997 (Season 5 on Sci Fi Channel);
Additional Specials: 1998 (exact dates unknown; aired on Sci Fi Channel)
Of special note:
Merchandise based on the show was sold, including three VHS tapes (Sightings: The UFO Report, Sightings: The Ghost Report, and Sightings: The Psychic Experience, all compilations from the show); two books (Sightings and Sightings: UFOs, featuring written story segments from the series); T-shirts; wall-hanging tapestries; and a CD-ROM for the PC (Sightings: The UFO Encyclopedia aka The UFOpedia).
In 2002, a movie based on a segment of the show aired on cable. It was called Sightings: Heartland Ghost, starring Beau Bridges, and was made available on DVD.
In 2003, a paranormal documentary series called Unexplained Mysteries began airing in syndication. The show, produced by the same production company, consisted mainly of previous footage from Sightings in a new style and format. The series aired from 2003 to 2005.
