Shrek is an Academy Award-wining animated comedic fantasy produced by DreamWorks and directed by Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson. The film starred Mike Myers as the voice of the Ogre, Shrek, who, in order to regain his swampy home, agrees to rescue Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) from a dragon so that she can become Lord Farquaad's — the ruler of Duloc — bride. The film incorporated aspects and characters of several traditional fairy tales but updated them for the current era creating a new twist on old themes that proved extremely popular. The film grossed over $40 million in its opening weekend and went on to earn over $484 million world wide. The film launched three sequels, Shrek 2 (2004) which nearly doubled the world wide box office total of its predecessor Shrek the Third which debuted in May 2007 and a fourth film Shrek goes Fourth aiming at a 2010 release.
