Sheldon Alan "Shel" Silverstein (September 25, 1930 – May 10, 1999) is an American poet, composer, cartoonist, screenwriter occasionally referred to as Uncle Shelby, particularly when writing children's books, for which he is best known.
He is also a singer of amusing, somewhat risque songs.
Silverstein was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois.
