She-Hulk is a fictional comic book superhero, owned by Marvel Comics.

Unlike her cousin, the gamma irradiated Hulk, when lawyer Jennifer Walters transforms into the She-Hulk it's usually by choice. When functioning normally, Jennifer can transform herself from her human to She-Hulk form pretty much at will. She retains her intelligence and personality as She-Hulk, though she is more aggressive and less inhibited. Because of this, Jennifer likes being She-Hulk, and usually chooses to remain in that form. She goes from a 5’ 10” lawyer to a 6’ 7” green-skinned powerhouse with confidence, personality, and a hell of a figure.

When her original short lived series was cancelled, it seemed the She-Hulk seemed destined for obscurity. Then She-Hulk did a stint as a member of the Fantastic Four, temporarily replacing the team’s usual powerhouse, the Thing. Artist and writer John Byrne discovered her true potential when he drew a picture of her partially nude sun-bathing on the roof of the Baxter Building (Fantastic Four #275, if you want to see the actual pictures). The entire world seemed to realize at once that She-Hulk could be a funny, and very sexy, character. Suddenly, she was very popular among comic fans and creators. This led to a She-Hulk graphic novel and a new series.

This new series, written and drawn by John Byrne, helped establish her new unique style. The She-Hulk’s own comic book series is characterized by superhero self-parody, and a unique breaking down of the “fourth wall” as the character at times seems aware of herself as being featured in a comic book. When she didn't like where the story was going, she would argue with the writer, at times going over his head to the editor. She'd peak over at other panels to see what was coming, jump through pages, basically break all the rules. Creators were so tickled by this, that when she would guest star in another book, they would treat this awareness as a super-power, and have her ability to break the fourth wall help out in dangerous situations. This second series lasted 60 issues.

In her current series, she works for the law firm of Goodman, Lieber, Kurtzberg, & Holliway located at the Timely Plaza building, in the field of “Superhuman Law”. This practice has led to unusual cases involving inter-galactic space beings, time and dimensional travel, and an array of Marvel’s strangest and most bizarre characters and their legal problems. The law firm maintains an extensive comic book library in its basement, which turn out to carry legal weight in this unique field of law in the Marvel Universe.

Due to the events of the limited crossover series Civil War, Jennifer is currently in conflict with Initiative Leader, S.H.I.E.L.D. Director, and former friend with benefits Tony Stark (Iron Man). She-Hulk has since quit practicing law, and is now working as a bounty hunter for Freeman Bonds Inc., a subsidiary of her old law firm. Her partner is a Skrull (a shape-shifting alien) named Jazinda.

Character Origin

When we first meet Jennifer Walters she is a practicing criminal defense attorney in Los Angeles. When she was a girl living in Los Angeles she would often vacation with her Aunt and Uncle, the Banners, in Dayton, Ohio. Despite a five year age difference, she became “brother and sister close” with her cousin Bruce. They saw less of each other when Bruce left Dayton to go to college in New Mexico. After college, Bruce went to Medical school for two years before he left to become an atomic scientist. Jennifer, meanwhile, went to law school at the University of California in Los Angeles. Bruce broke off contact with his family for security reasons when he started working for the government on the Gamma Bomb. Jennifer lost touch with her cousin completely.

Years later, after becoming the Hulk, Bruce re-establishes contact with her. At the time Jennifer is defending a criminal Lou Monkton, who is being framed for murder by gangster Nicholas Trask. The gangster makes an attempt on Jennifer’s life, resulting in her taking a potentially deadly bullet wound. She is losing blood quickly, so Banner improvises an emergency blood transfusion. When the gangsters make a second attempt on her life, the gamma irradiated blood turns Jennifer into the She-Hulk.
