Shawn Farrell <span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span>
Shawn Farrell is a fictional character on the USA Network original series The 4400 played by Patrick Flueger. Shawn was born December 12, 1983 to Susan Farrell, sister of NTAC agent Tom Baldwin. Shawn was abducted on April 22, 2001 at Highland Beach, outside Seattle, Washington while with his cousin Kyle Baldwin. That night Kyle fell into a coma and was unable to tell anyone what had happened to Shawn. On July 11, 2004, Shawn was one of 4,400 people to be returned in a flash of light to Highland beach. The 4,400 had been abducted over the past sixty years and all were returned no older than the day they left and with no memory of where they'd been.

HistoryThe people from the future responsible for the 4,400's disappearance never intended Shawn to be a 4,400. He interrupted Kyle's abduction and as a result, he was taken while his cousin was injured and fell into a coma that lasted three years. When Shawn returned, he was quarantined with the other 4400. The only family he was able to see was his uncle, Tom. Tom blamed Shawn for Kyle's coma. Shawn and the other 4,400 were eventually released from quarantine and Shawn reunited with his family. He and his younger brother Danny were now the same age. It quickly became apparent that Shawn was different. He had developed an ability to heal. He denied his ability, particularly to his uncle, just wanting to be normal. Shawn returned to school but his adjustment proved difficult. He was mocked by his peers and another student physically attacked him. During the attack, Shawn discovered a new ability, polar opposite of his ability to heal; He could kill with a touch. Shawn stopped before killing the other guy but as a result he was further isolated and feared by his peers. Shawn visited Kyle in the hospital and used his abilities to heal him. Kyle awakened from his coma, but he was not the same as he was before. Tom was grateful for Shawn's help with his son and Shawn began to come to terms with his gift. Danny's girlfriend, Nikki Hudson, tried to compensate for Shawn's difficulties and the two developed a close bond. Danny grew jealous of their relationship and wary of Shawn. Nikki broke up with Danny and she and Shawn developed a sexual relationship. Danny became angry when he found out and the two got into a fight and Shawn defended himself using his abilities. Terrified, his mother threw him out of the house. Season 2Shawn turned to Jordan Collier for refuge, seeking a place to say at Collier's compound, built to accommodate the 4,400. Collier took Shawn under his wing and made use of his abilities. Collier built The 4400 Center and requested that Shawn heal some of its contributors. Shawn questioned Jordan's methods, but ultimately agreed with his goals. Jordan groomed Shawn for a position of power which proved vital as Jordan was shortly assassinated. Though devastated by Jordan's death, Shawn immediately took up the reins of power and became the head of the center. Matthew Ross, an aid to Jordan, helped guide Shawn in his work. Shawn was initially uncertain about his willingness and ability to head the center but Lily Tyler convinced him that he could use his power to help others. Shawn eventually renewed his relationship with his family, his brother in particular. Shawn invited Danny to the 4,400 center and Danny began to understand the weight on Shawn's shoulders. he came to respect his brother and ultimately forgave him for what happened with Nikki. Kyle came to Shawn at the center having realized that he'd killed Jordan Collier. Shawn was naturally upset but appeared to forgive his cousin and hugged him. When Shawn touched him, he released a second life force from Kyle, the one truly responsible for Jordan's death. In "The Fifth Page" Shawn fell ill with what he initially believed to be the flu. He soon realized he was severely ill and he was quarantined with hundreds of other 4,400 who'd also fallen ill. He was healed when Diana dosed him with pure promicin retrieved from baby Isabelle Tyler. Once recovered, he was able to heal the other 4,400. Season 3Not long after, Shawn was confronted by a beautiful young woman who claimed to be Isabelle Tyler, miraculously fully grown. Isabelle's mother, Lily, had also aged many years as a result of what happened to her daughter, and became an elderly woman. Shawn tried to heal Lily but was unable to do more than temporarily ease her pain. Isabelle enlisted Shawn's help in experiencing the rites of passage into adulthood that she'd missed as a result of her rapid aging. Shawn taught her to swim and to drive, and quite innocently Isabelle requested he have sex with her. Shawn initially refused but was unable to fight his attraction to her and the two developed a sexual relationship. Shawn came under attack by the Nova Group and initially denied having any dealings with them. He was later forced to admit to Matthew and Richard that he made a deal with them to protect the center. The two became worried about his decision making and Shawn was forced to accept Richard's help in running the center. When Richard discovered Shawn's relationship with Isabelle, he was enraged. He believed Shawn had taken advantage of her. He demanded that he break up with her and Shawn agreed. Isabelle however, refused, explaining that she was not ready for it to end. Richard and Shawn began to realize that they may have a problem with Isabelle who had more power than any 4,400 and a determination to have things her way. In "Graduation Day" Shawn developed severe paranoia and became a danger to himself and others, even attacking Maia believing he was healing her. He was diagnosed with disorganized schizophrenia and Richard wanted to institutionalize him but Isabelle disagreed. She broke Shawn out of the facility and hunted down the Nova group members believed to be responsible. Isabelle killed several 4,400 before finding the source of Shawn's schizophrenia in Daniel Armand. Isabelle turned Armand's own ability against him as punishment, rendering him insane. Shawn was horrified when he realized what Isabelle had done. He tried to break up with her again but she refused to accept his decision. When his old girlfriend Nikki visited to gain his help healing her father of cancer the two began to rekindle their feelings for each other. Isabelle warned Shawn that Nikki was not for him and Shawn realized that Isabelle would do anything or hurt anyone to get what she wanted. Isabelle insisted that she and Shawn had to be together and that they should marry. She told Shawn that without him, she' would do terrible things. Shawn used his ability to try to kill her but she proved impervious. Shawn began to come to terms with the idea that marrying Isabel may be the right thing to do. Shortly before his wedding, Shawn received a gift from a 4,400; a cigar that would enable him to see possible futures. He smoked the cigar and saw a future in which he kills Richard. Shawn called off the wedding to prevent that future from occurring but a second smoking of the cigar shows an even worse future where the world is near destruction and his uncle, Tom, dies in his arms. Shawn discussed the visions with Richard, who advised that knowing the future may help prevent it. Shawn decided to go through with the wedding. Before the ceremony could begin however, a man called out to him and Shawn realized its Jordan Collier. Shawn postponed the wedding to search for Jordan. He explained to Isabelle that he needed to find Jordan first. Shawn believed that Collier might be able to save Isabelle from the terrible things she believed she would do. Collier was found and eventually returned to the center but had only one message for Isabelle. He told her to leave. Despite being happy that Jordan had returned, Shawn grew concerned about his actions. Jordan used a sixteen-year old 4,400 student from the center to help break members of the NOVA group out of NTAC. Jordan told Shawn he planned to attack Ryland's 4,440 soldier program. Worried about Jordan and concerned over possible loss of life, Shawn informed NTAC of Jordan's plans. Jordan embarrassed Shawn in front of Tom and Diana by telling him it was a test of his loyalty, one that he failed. Though Shawn remains concerned about Jordan's decision, he continues to work with him. CharacterShawn began as an angst-ridden teen and became a responsible adult. He has struggled with his gift, knowing that despite his talents he can't heal everyone, particularly those who are determined to damage themselves. Shawn desperately wants to do what is right and he is constantly being pushed and influenced from all sides. He has borne up well under the weight of power but as his choices increasingly affect others he has begun to doubt his decisions and his ability to make the right choice. Jordan Collier has taken on the role of father in Shawn's life and has greatly influenced him. Shawn has proven that he has a mind of his own a deep sense of morality independent of Jordan and his influence.
