Colonel Shaun Jeffrey Christopher "headed the first successful Earth Saturn probe". Because of this significant achievement, the decision is made to return his father, Captain John Christopher to Earth in the late 1960s (prior to Sean's birth). This is despite the fact that the elder Christopher had knowledge of future technology which could affect the Earth timeline.
John Christopher obtained the information when the 23rd century Enterprise, a spaceship, accidentally travels back in time.
