Shanti virus

<span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span>

On the series Heroes, the Shanti virus is a deadly virus first discovered in Shanti Suresh. The virus is only found in individuals with a genetic mutation that grants them extraordinary abilities such as telepathy, superhuman strength and regeneration.

Spoiler Warning: Plot details and/or information about the ending follow. If you wish to enjoy the work first, stop reading here and return at another time.

Shanti was killed by the virus but the strain survived and later infected Molly Walker a young girl with a remote-viewing related ability allowing her to locate anyone in the world. The virus rendered her unusual abilities useless. That virus was cured by antibodies within the blood of Mohinder Suresh, the brother of Shanti and son of geneticist, Chandra Suresh.

A mysterious organization known only as "The Company" acquired samples of the virus from Shanti Suresh. They set to work creating new viral strains with the goal of creating one that would permanently remove abilities from individuals with dangerous abilities. One of their strains, 138, proved highly contagious and deadly to regular people. The scientist working on it, Victoria Pratt wanted the stain destroyed, particularly after Adam Monroe attempted to release it into the population as a part of his plot to "save" the world from itself. The viral sample was transferred to a secure facility in Odessa, Texas where it remained in storage for thirty years.

Less virulent strains still existed and was cured in an individual known only as the Haitian by Dr. Mohinder Suresh. Another strain modified by the company and intended to be used to subdue Maury Parkman infected Niki Sanders. The mutated strain did not respond to Suresh' antibodies and a new method was required to cure it.

Suresh and Company head, Bob Bishop, sought out Claire Bennet a high school cheerleader with the ability to regenerate from any injury. Her blood in combination with Suresh' antibodies proved effective. However, in the year 2008, a deadly strain, possibly 138, was released killing 93% of the world's populations. Peter Petrelli discovered this event by traveling to the future. He returned with the goal of stopping it and teamed up with Adam Monroe to complete his goal.
